WHEN I SAY AFRICA is an upcoming documentary by filmmaker Cassandra Herrman and anthropologist Kathryn Mathers that takes a provocative look at enduring stereotypes of the African continent. It follows encounters between Africans and Americans, challenging Westerners to turn the lens on themselves and rethink doing good at home and abroad. When I Say Africa’s team has been working for decades, both personally and professionally to explore why and how images of Africa in the West still silence or dehumanise Africans, and to examine their own roles as white filmmakers and educators in representing the continent.
The event at The Africa Centre will include an exclusive screening of an excerpt from the upcoming documentary as well as a panel discussion on how development actors and charities can break with past stereotypes and move towards a more constructive framing of their work. The panel discussion will be moderated by Hannah Ajala, journalist and founder of ‘We Are Black Journos’ and feature Cassandra Herrman, Kathryn Mathers and others.”
