Why Black In Carnaby?

It’s difficult for young entrepreneurs to have a presence in any high street store. It’s twice as hard if you’re a black-owned business. The majority of black founders lack commercial visibility. We wanted to highlight one of the key ways people can support the black community, not just during Black History Month but beyond, by buying black-owned. From a collection of outstanding creatives in fashion, beauty, art, literature, film and photography, we offered a space in the heart of London’s West End for them to showcase and sell their products to a weekly footfall of over 900,000 people. Showcasing a wide range of black-owned businesses, over 200 businesses joined us in-store including fantastic takeovers and special guests, like Nubian Skin, VAMP & DLOW.

As well as providing a space for emerging black-owned brands and entrepreneurs, Black In Carnaby became a hub for our community, giving a space for people to immerse themselves in the diversity and power of the community. We welcomed into our store various special guests including the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan and our storefront designer Yinkal Ilore MBE. Our project, supported by Carnaby London, Shaftsbury PLC & Sister London, has presented an inspiring initiative that has contributed to the future aims of My Runway Group. We deeply believe in the stand against inequality which has fueled our mission to shape the next generation of creatives and black founders.
